Laser Cataract Surgery, introduced in the United States with a femtosecond laser in February 2010, has become widely adopted by cataract surgeons worldwide. Doctors Biggs, French, and Sherman are prominent surgeons in the Detroit Metropolitan area and were among the first in Oakland County to embrace this cutting-edge procedure. Oakland Eye Care boasts the Alcon LensX surgical system, which includes the ORA and Verion Image Guided Systems. This technology’s popularity arises from its ability to consistently execute critical cataract surgery steps with superior precision and accuracy compared to traditional manual techniques.

Oakland Eye Care has invested in the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser . The precise, reproducible steps performed by the LenSx® laser means better lens positioning, less trauma to the eye and more predictable visual results; things that are especially important if you want to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses with one of the advanced IOLs we offer.

To begin, a stair-step incision is created on the edge of the cornea with the laser instead of with a blade. The incision is self-sealing and rarely needs suturing.

In traditional cataract surgery, the stair-step incision created with blade.

The LenSx laser is used to create the stair-step incision during laser catartact surgery.

The laser then creates an opening called a “capsulorhexis” in the thin capsular membrane that surrounds the natural lens. This opening provides access to remove the natural lens. Studies have shown that less than 10% of manual capsulorhexis have been able to achieve the same accuracy that is produced with Laser Cataract Surgery.

In order to remove the cataract, the lens must be softened and divided into manageable sections. This critical step is also performed by the laser, which causes less stress to the delicate fibers surrounding the capsular membrane that holds the lens in place.

After the natural lens is removed, the IOL of your choice is positioned inside the eye.
